Abstract

Fish are the largest group of vertebrates, comprising more than half of all vertebrate species. According to the latest data from the FishBase database (Until March 2023), there are currently over 35,000 fish species belonging to 623 families worldwide.Due to the large number of fish species, it is very inconvenient for domestic practitioners of fish biology to obtain the scientific names and Chinese names of fish. Currently, many books on fish taxonomy have been published in China, but most of them were published in the last century. The time span of their compilation is long, some content is already outdated or incomplete, and there is a lack of mechanisms for timely updates, which may affect their application in the field of fish biology research. We have released the first version of the cnfishbase Chinese fish database (https://cnfishbase.cn/). Our database solves the above-mentioned difficulties. This database uses the latest classification system, and has established a comparison between Latin names and Chinese names, which can be easily linked to FishBase to view detailed information on fish. The database features the following sub-functions: (1) World Fish Database (2) Chinese Fish Database (3) Fish Data Statistics(4) Interactive Data Visualization. Compared to traditional fish reference books in China, our database has the following advantages: (1) comprehensiveness. The cnfishbase Chinese fish database links to FishBase.Users can easily enter FishBase to view detailed information about the fish. (2) High-quality data. The data in FishBase comes from diverse sources. These ensure the reliability and accuracy of the data in the FishBase database. The cnfishbase Chinese fish database adopts the classification system of FishBase. (3) User-friendliness. The cnfishbase Chinese fish database has a simple and user-friendly interface that makes it easy for users to search and analyze fish information. (4) Novelty: The classification system of this database adopts the latest international fish classification system, which better reflects the phylogenetic relationship among fish compared to the traditional morphological classification system. The cnfishbase Chinese fish database can be used for learning ichthyology, ecology, and fishery management.Users can easily access the linked FishBase fish detail pages to improve their efficiency. Users can use the rich data and information of cnfishbase for learning and research, helping them better understand the latest classification system. Help them better understand and appreciate the diversity and importance of fish.
